Individual shops for individual styles
Sometimes you want something no one else has got and stand out of the crowd with a funky one-off piece. So if you’re feeling a bit quirky, you’re in the right place. Manchester, renowned for its music scene and creative fashion, is a place where independent retailers thrive. You’re sure to find something special, from classic vintage pieces, to clothes by new and undiscovered designers, to all the arty crafty knick-knacks you could possibly want.

Classic clothes
What does the future hold? Some stylish old/new clothes, that’s for sure. Rags to Bitches offer vintage shopping without the jumble sale rummaging. While you pick up some classic pieces, tuck into some free cake or even try the tarot reading service. For more vintage gems, check out Retro Rehab and Pop Boutique. And for second-hand style with a social conscience, try Oxfam Originals where the ever-changing stock features the pick of the charity’s retro and designer donations.

Improvise – accessorise
Need some shoes to go with the outfit? Hussain the Barbers isn’t a barbers – it just used to be. Now it sells trainers – not any old trainers, but covetable collector’s items from the US and Japan, displayed amidst ex-salon paraphernalia. For more accessories to make that outfit work even harder, browse the individually crafted, unique jewellery made and sold at the Manchester Craft and Design Centre. And a little further afield in Chorlton, South Manchester you’ll find fabulous, hand-made shoes, bags and belts at Kiss My Feet.

At the cutting edge
Book browsing is a whole new experience at Magma. Talking about books is as important as buying them so share ideas and browse the latest design publications in the most stylish surroundings. And furniture takes on an extra watery dimension at Aqua-Tech, which specialises in aquatic furnishings – that’s lamp bases, coffee tables and other household items filled with…fish.

Musical magic

From trance to jazz to rock, the independent music retailer is alive and well in Manchester. Serious vinyl and CD fans alike will find themselves spoilt for choice. Try Vinyl Revival for records, CDs and memorabilia. Vinyl Exchange is the biggest second-hand music shop in Manchester and a good place to hunt for rarities.

top tips

  1. You can find much of Manchester’s independent shopping within the Northern Quarter. It’s Manchester at its funky and creative best with boutiques, record shops and contemporary art.
  2. Don’t miss Affleck’s Palace. Wander through four floors of independent and alternative stalls and boutiques. Have a drink on the top floor and enjoy the view over the city centre.
  3. Take the weight off your feet with a post-shop drink in one of the Northern Quarter’s bars. Try Dry Bar, very Manchester and very cool, or Matt and Phred’s where you can enjoy live jazz and good food.
