Responsible visitor charter

We ask that visitors follow a few easy steps to minimise the impact of their trip to Manchester.

1. Plan your green arrival

We have excellent public transport links, so leave the car at home. Most UK cities have direct train services into Manchester and coach operators such as National Express and Megabus have stations in the centre of the city.

2. Use public transport

Manchester is easily explored on foot, with plenty of pedestrian-only zones. You can also explore further afield using the frequent tram or bus service. Check out our transport section here for further options like the free city centre bus, hiring a bike or even walking routes.

3. Conserve energy in your hotel room

You can make a difference by turning down the heating or air-conditioning by just one degree. Close the window if the heating is on and remember to switch off lights and appliances whenever you leave the room.

4. Be water wise

Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth. If you have a kettle in your room only fill it with enough water for what you need. Most hotels have laundry and towel policies to save water and energy - please be willing to adhere to these.

5. Reduce, reuse, recycle

Avoid overly packaged goods and limit the number of plastic carrier bags you accept by carrying your own reusable bag. Bring your own water bottle and some rechargeable batteries for your camera and other gadgets. If your hotel offers recycling facilities, please use them.

6. Buy local

Support local producers by shopping at farmers markets, farm shops, independent shops and galleries. There is a great range of local food, arts and crafts available. Here is our guide to shopping green in Manchester.

7. Support 'green' businesses

Stay in accommodation and visit attractions with green credentials. A full list can be found here.
