Highlights for 2012
Once Upon A Wartime
11 February 2012 to 2 September 2012
Thrilling tales of loyalty, separation, excitement, survival and
identity are brought to life in this major exhibition for children
and adults alike. Some of the best-loved children's stories about
war are illuminated through interactive activities and unique
objects from conflict.
The free exhibition is filled with all the drama of five acclaimed novels: War Horse by Michael Morpurgo, Carrie's War by Nina Bawden, The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall, The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier and Little Soldier by Bernard Ashley. Explore these perilous stories alongside the history of real life conflicts from 1914 to the present day - all through the eyes of fictional children.
The Falklands - 1982
24 March 2012 - July 2014
This unique new outdoor photographic display contains images from
the extensive IWM photographic archive. Marking the thirtieth
anniversary of the war in the Falklands, six images will be shown
in huge, 5 metre high frames outside IWM North's main visitor
entrance.
10 @ 10: a decade of surprising stories
30 June 2012 to July 2013
Marking IWM North's tenth birthday in 2012, this exhibition tells
ten remarkable and surprising human stories. Since opening in 2002,
the Museum has shown how war shapes the lives of ordinary people in
extraordinary circumstances. This small, powerful display will
reveal ten of the most remarkable tales the museum has uncovered in
its first decade, while exploring the history of war and conflict
from 1914 to the present day.
Build the Truce Big Picture Show
From July 2012, IWM North Main Exhibition Space
This new 360-degree Big Picture Show, with images and footage
projected onto the 20 walls throughout IWM North's Main Exhibition
Space, explores the concepts of conflict resolution and truce.
Inspired by the Olympic Truce, the show has been granted the
Inspire mark ahead of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic
Games.
Major New Exhibition: Frontline Medicine
13 October 2012 to September 2013
EAxploring the desire to preserve life in the face of the
destructive nature of war, this exhibition examines the experience
of those caught in harm's way and the bravery, resilience,
commitment and determination of those who put their own lives on
the line to save others.
Featuring fascinating personal stories and artefacts from the unrivalled IWM collections, the exhibition will explore health, fitness and disease, as well as the treatment of battlefield casualties in the maelstrom of the front line. It will look at field hospitals behind the lines, medical facilities at home and the rehabilitation of the injured. It will examine the journey of a casualty through the medical chain.

1943: Photographs by Cecil Beaton
Until March 2012
Displaying some of Cecil Beaton's most iconic Second World War
shipyard images in huge 5m high frames outside the Museum on The
Quays, Cecil also worked as an official photographer for the
Ministry of Information during the Second World War.

Afghanistan

Marking the tenth anniversary of the start of the war in
Afghanistan, IWM North is presenting an installation by the artist
Derek Eland - the latest in the Museum's Reactions series where
artists are invited to display work showing how war shapes
lives.
In The Spotlight: Remembering 9/11
Until September 2013
In the Spotlight is your chance to see intriguing items from the
Museum's vast collection on special display for a limited period of
time only. A British Union flag recovered from Ground Zero in the
wreckage of the World Trade Center, New York, is on public display
for the first time.
Artist's Reaction: The Crusader by Gerry
Judah
Until 1 March 2015
IWM North is exhibiting a sculpture by renowned contemporary
artist Gerry Judah. The huge work of art is the first exhibit
visitors see on entering the Museum's Main Exhibition Space. Gerry
Judah's new piece has been created in direct response to
contemporary global conflict. It reflects on modern-day wars but
also resonates with the history of world conflict, showing how war
has and continues to shape lives.
