Chester is a wonderful combination of history and retail with the jewel in the crown being the complete circle of defensive walls. Traces of the city's Roman past are still evident with the amphitheatre, bathhouses and temples that attract thousands of visitors each year. Chester is also great for shopping with a unique two-tiered gallery of boutiques called The Rows, jostling for space on the city's ancient streets.
Just 45 minutes from Manchester, Liverpool offers more museums, galleries and theatre than any place outside London. Cultural highlights include the Tate North Gallery, the Maritime Museum and the Walker Art Gallery. The city sights can also be viewed from the famous Mersey Ferry, one of the oldest ferry services in the world. And a trip to Liverpool wouldn't be complete without a mention of the 'Fab Four', the Beatles.
