Fun Facts about Manchester

Inspired by the sermons of the aptly named Rev. William Cowherd, the vegetarian movement began in 1809 in Salford, Greater Manchester.
It was in 1904 that Charles Rolls and Henry Royce first met in Manchester's city centre Midland Hotel, setting up the famous company two years later. A permanent statue to this event can be seen in the hotel's entrance.
Calling all Californian's
In 2009, Manchester became an official 'Sister City' of Los Angeles, as the two destinations forged links in business, art, culture, science and education.
In 1948 the first computer to have a stored programme and memory was developed in Manchester. Nicknamed 'The Baby', a replica can be seen at the Museum of Science and Industry.

Founded in 1653, Chetham's Library is the oldest public library in the English speaking world. It is also the site of a meeting between Marx and Engels where parts of the Communist manifesto were written at a table, which is still in situ.
