Denzell Gardens

Denzell Gardens

At the start of the 20th Century, wealthy industrialist Samuel Lamb decided to create gardens to complement his substantial Victorian house. A team of 16 gardeners created and managed extensive landscaped areas, and croquet lawn, tennis court, formal gardens and hot houses containing vines, peaches and orchids.

In 1936, following the death of Samuel Lamb, Bowdon Urban District Council took over management of the gardens and made them available for the public to enjoy; the gardens are now owned by Trafford MBC, whilst the grade II listed house operates as offices for a private company.

There are a number of heritage features that provide focal points within the garden design including the lych gate, an ornamental pond with a gravity-fed fountain, several pedestal urns and a sunken garden.

The footprint of the sunken garden is elliptical in shape and is approximately 25m in length along the long axis. The sunken garden has been refurbished in 2009.
