University of Manchester History and Heritage Tours
The University of Manchester was England’s first civic university and its origins are closely tied to Manchester’s development as the world’s first industrial city. The University went on to further the frontiers of knowledge and helped shape the modern world. The atom was first split here in 1917 and the world’s first digital computer ran its first programme on campus in 1948. Many of the world’s most influential thinkers have been part of our intellectual community, creating an ethos that has resonated through time and across the globe. We work hard to preserve our heritage, which you can enjoy today by visiting our collections and taking tours of the historic buildings on campus.
