A touch of the seaside has washed over Manchester with the creation of a giant sandcastle in the Great Northern’s summer sandpit.

The sculpture, which took 11 and a half hours to make using eight tonnes of sand, is the work of beach holiday specialists, On the Beach.

The show-stopping sandcastle is two metres high and features incredible detailing, including turrets, staircases and even its very own sand man.

Alan Harding Managing Director at On the Beach said: “The sandcastle looks incredible.

“Making sandcastles is one of the most cherished beach holiday activities and, whilst On the Beach specialises in arranging people’s dream holidays abroad, our sandcastle is the perfect way of bringing a touch of that beach magic home to Manchester.

“We’re hoping people enjoy getting up close to the sandcastle, taking photos, and maybe get themselves to the beach for real in our holiday competition.”

As part of the build, On the Beach is offering one lucky person the chance to win a £1,000 holiday voucher.

Housed in the basin of the iconic amphitheater, the fun and free community sandpit is open for six weeks with 50 tonnes of beach-washed sand and logs to enjoy.

As the epicenter of the city’s world-famous industrial heritage, the Great Northern’s sandpit revives the city’s historic tradition of creating free and safe areas for children to play outdoors.

Mark Schofield, Centre Director for Great Northern said: “The sandpit has been so popular since its construction in July, where we’ve seen large numbers of children enjoying the area. We’re hoping the sand sculpture will show children how creative they can be while playing in sand and inspire their own crazy creations!”

So come and enjoy the totally beachin’ sandpit throughout the summer until 4th September.

The sandcastle was built by sand artists, Sand In Your Eye, who have teamed up with On the Beach to share their top tips on how to create your own crowd-worthy sandcastles this summer.
