As a city with incredible architecture and some truly beautiful buildings, it's no surprise that Manchester is the perfect place to tie the knot. From outstanding hotels to quirky libraries, there's plenty of places to say 'I do' in the city. We asked the fantastic local wedding photographer Maddie Farris to share her top alternative wedding venues in Manchester.

Located only 5 minutes away from the city centre, Elizabeth Gaskell's House is a perfect venue for small weddings. Being a Grade II listed building, Elizabeth Gaskell's house has plenty of history and a beautiful garden perfect for a drinks reception. Inside the house, there are plenty of rooms full of character such as the study & drawing room which have Victorian style décor and furnishings.

2. The Whitworth Gallery

You can have your ceremony at The Whitworth in one of the amazing gallery spaces, perfect for those looking for a contemporary wedding venue. The Grand Hall is a beautifully light space for a wedding breakfast and there are plenty of places for quirky photo-opportunities in the many galleries.

3. The Portico Library

A hidden gem on Mosley Street right in the city centre, The Portico Library is a beautiful historic library which dates back to 1806. Situated on Deansgate, Elliot House is a stunning Grade II listed building and until 1995 it was the city's main registry office. The Chamber Room where you can have your wedding ceremony is full of history & character. Elliot House has many spaces inside for photographs such as the beautiful main staircase, but it is also very close-by to St.Peter's Square which makes for a great photographs.

5. The Castlefield Rooms

The Castlefield Rooms is another lovely smaller wedding venue in the city centre. With its backdrop of Castlefield Basin featuring plenty of red brick, cobbles & industrial iron-work it is a true Manchester setting!
