1. Celebrate Black Culture at The Whitworth
On 6-7 August, Black Gold Arts will take over The Whitworth & Whitworth Park, for a two-day outdoor music and arts festival that showcases the very best in live music, DJs, dance, performance and fashion. The festival, the 7th of its kind, features local and national black artists. Tickets are free with no need to book.
2. Hear stories from Ukraine in a one-woman theatre show
Performed by Ukrainian actress Shorena Shoniia, on Thursday 4 August at The Lowry, Stories from Ukraine is a one-woman show featuring texts from modern Ukrainian playwrights and writers, written after the start of the war in Ukraine. With some texts in English and some in Ukrainian, the play focuses on confusion, survival, hatred and love, rage and strength of spirit. Tickets start from £13 with all proceeds going to a Ukrainian children’s charity.
3. Celebrate a one-day festival of free family fun at Whitworth Park
As part of 2022 Our Year, Manchester City Council are helping you to celebrate National Play Day with a day of free family fun on Wednesday 3 August. From 11am until 3pm, Whitworth Park will host an exciting festival of workshops and activities for children up to age 14. Expect face-painting, storytelling, crafts, circus skills, den building, bug hunts, a climbing wall, and much more. No need to book, just turn up.
4. Manchester music legends come to the city’s newest garden neighbourhood
One of Manchester’s newest neighbourhoods, Kampus, is set to play host to six Manchester legends including the Hacienda’s Dave Haslam from Friday 5 August. Teaming up with Levanter Fine Foods and Cloudwater Brew Co. for the mother of all al fresco parties, the all-star line-up features something for everyone from indie folk to Balaeric Beats and transcendent disco and house.
5. Take an icy plunge with a different form of therapy at Whitworth Locke
Without the need to submerge yourself in a glacial lake (or Sale water Park for that matter), aparthotel Whitworth Locke is offering you the chance to unwind with two three-hour sessions of dynamic breathwork and mindful immersion into their ice baths. Prices from £30 or free for guests at Whitworth Locke.
New opening of the week: Castlefield Viaduct
This weekend The National Trust official open the Grade II-listed Castlefield Viaduct. The new urban park, reminiscent of New York’s famous High Line, is now open to the public with views of the city not seen in over 40 years. After years of locals suggesting it, the National Trust has taken on the site and has opened around half of the 330m viaduct as part of a phase one trial that will inform permanent plans for the site. Entry is free, but please pre-book in advance.
Book Now: Manchester Pride Festival 2022
Coming back for their annual celebrations, the Manchester Pride Festival is set to take place over the August Bank Holiday, with a 4-day extravaganza. Taking place on the city’s famous Canal Street, a whole host of acts will be coming together to help celebrate the wonderful LGBTQ+ community.
