The gallery has historically been at the centre of civic and cultural life and its founding mission to use art for social change continues to this day.
The Art Garden, opened in 2016 was designed by Chelsea gold medalist Sarah Price, and is the ideal spot from which to admire the Whitworth’s multi-award-winning redevelopment and major outdoor artworks.
Anya Gallaccio’s Ghost Tree is a permanent sculpture in Whitworth Park that replicates a missing tree in stainless steel.

What to expect:
19th century industrialist and philanthropist Sir Joseph Whitworth standardised the humble screw thread - an invention that was to help earn him a fortune worth over £722 million today, resulting in the UK’s first ever art gallery in a park being founded in his name. Take this 45 minute guided tour to discover how the Whitworth amassed an internationally-important 60,000 strong selection of artworks including 22 works by J.M.W Turner, The Ancient of Days by William Blake, an outstanding collection of works on paper and important collections of textiles and wallpapers.
The Gallery in the Park tour gives unrivalled access to the artworks that make the Whitworth so special - which include a selection of wallpapers equalling that of the V&A, and one of the most significant public collections of ‘Outsider Art’ in the UK. The gallery’s Textiles Collection is also of international significance, featuring 20,000 dress and textile objects from around the world. Initially selected by the Whitworth’s founders to inspire workers in Manchester’s cotton mills and dating from the third century AD to the present, highlights in the Textiles Collection include garments worn in first millennium Egypt, French and Italian silks and the works of renowned designers such as William Morris.
The gallery has also built upon its historic roots with huge cultural ambition: leading international artists now present daring new work in the Whitworth’s
RIBA Award-winning £15 million wing, completed in 2015 and responsible for doubling the size of the gallery.
