If you’re planning a trip to Greater Manchester and love discovering local gems, Rochdale’s Curtain Theatre is a must. Nestled close to the town centre, this beloved 180-seat venue – which recently celebrated 100 years of theatrical magic – is undergoing a new refurb that promises both style and substance.

The transformation, part of a wider investment led by Rochdale Development Agency, isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about breathing new energy into the area and cementing the theatre’s place as a cultural cornerstone.

The refurbishment is a celebration of the theatre’s rich history (did you know it’s been entertaining audiences since 1925?) and a bold invitation to future fans. A series of engagement workshops with residents shaped the creative decision and resulted in a look that’s both theatrical and inviting.

Milkstone Road itself is buzzing with renewal, thanks to the ‘Made in Milkstone’ programme and Culture Co-op. Supported by Rochdale Borough Council’s Community Regeneration Partnership funding, this initiative is making the neighbourhood more vibrant, welcoming, and distinctly Rochdale.

The Curtain Theatre was established in 1925 “for the vigorous performance of unusual plays, for the development of stagecraft and for the provision of pleasure for as many as care to seek it in this form” The Theatre took its name from the Elizabethan ‘Curtyn Theatre’, in…

Councillor Sue Smith captures the spirit of the project: “This is about putting culture at the heart of regeneration. The new design lifts the curtain on what makes this venue special, while opening its doors wider to new audiences and ensuring the benefits reach the whole neighbourhood.”

The Curtain Theatre’s own business director, Danny Groves, is equally enthusiastic: “The new façade will send a strong message to the town – this is a special place, and we love welcoming new visitors. There’s fantastic energy inside, and we’re excited to see the transformation begin.”

Sarah Castle, director at IF_DO, adds: “It’s been wonderful to collaborate with the creative volunteer team and reflect their spirit in the theatre’s new exterior. The bright façade, bold signage, and improved lighting will help keep Curtain Theatre at the heart of Rochdale’s cultural life.”
