The Hallé launch thrilling new chapter in the Orchestra’s history, welcoming their new Principle Conductor Kahchun Wong. He is set to launch his tenure on Thursday 26 September 2024 with the spellbinding combination of a new suite of pieces drawn from Benjamin Britten’s ballet The Prince of the Pagodas and Mahler’s Symphony No.1 ‘Titan’.
The charismatic Singaporean conductor, recently hailed as ‘a ball of energy and charm’ by the Observer, returns throughout the season to perform a number of thrilling scores that merge the musical cultures of East and West, as well as vibrant works from Britain and beyond that offer audiences the chance to experience fresh perspectives on the Hallé’s acclaimed artistry.
Taking over from Sir Mark Elder’s remarkable tenure, Visit Manchester spoke to Kahchun Wong on what brought him to Manchester and his plans for the Orchestra.
What drew you towards Manchester and the Hallé?
The infamous vibrant arts scene, along with a great orchestra with a rich history.
How do you approach programming for a season, considering audience engagement and diversity of repertoire?
I had the fortune of spending some time with the concert programmes of Charles Hallé in the founding years of the Hallé, and I am personally inspired by his eye for great masterpieces, alongside very visible championing of new works by composers of his time. We bring this signature into our first season as well. Above all, it's chock full of life-changing and life-affirming works which are favourites of mine.
Do you have any concerts or performances you’re most excited about?
All of my concerts, actually. They include so many life-changing masterpieces which I am emotionally connected with, as well as meaningful links to the present and future.
Do you have any advice for someone wanting to move into conducting?
Just do it if you breathe music daily!
