Manchester’s five-star hotel, The Lowry Hotel, named after one of Britain’s most famed artists, L.S.Lowry, is playing host to a daring and dynamic exhibition of pop art and graffiti artworks – ushering in a new artistic era for the Manchester institution.
The vibrant pieces are the brainchild of renowned artist and graphic designer Henry ‘Big H’ Chan, who’s acclaimed works include powerful portrayals of iconic figures synonymous with the last 50 years of pop culture including Prince, George Michael, Daniel Craig, and The Queen.
The works, now on display in The Lowry Hotel’s gallery space, satirise societal issues such as celebrity culture, power, and commercialism, with Big H drawing inspiration from preeminent artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Banksy.
Despite being hosted in The Lowry Hotel, the artworks are a far cry from the classically understated North West cityscapes and matchstick men that the great painter, L.S.Lowry is famed for.
Big H instead opts for bold, bright colours, with sharp and accurate geometric lines that jump off the canvas, interspersed with provocative text shedding light on 21st century touchstones.
The exhibition, hosted by Comme Ca Art, will remain in display at The Lowry Hotel until Tuesday 31 May. The are available for purchase, with prices ranging from £1,600 to £1,800.
Adrian Ellis, General Manager at The Lowry Hotel, said: “Our hotel is named after a world-famous artist, so it is only right that we carry the weight of this legacy and showcase new and thought-provoking works to our guests.
“The art that adorns our walls is all part of the exceptional experience our guests receive when they visit, and any guests who attend over the next couple of months are in for a real treat.”
The exhibition is being hosted by Comme Ca. Founded in 1994, Comme Ca has pioneered the creation of alternative exhibition venues throughout Manchester City Centre, offering emerging artists the opportunity to showcase their works to a wide and varied audience.
Since 2004 Comme Ca Art has worked alongside the five-star Lowry Hotel, producing an enviable line-up of exhibitions.
Claire Turner, Gallery Director at Comme Ca Art, said: “It is an honour and a privilege to have collaborated with The Lowry Hotel for the last 18 years.
“We pride ourselves on offering new artists the chance to exhibit their work and have it seen by new audiences. The hotel offers the perfect platform for this.
“I’m a huge fan of Big H’s work. I think his bold approach and eclectic style is really exciting - it’s not what you expect to see in a five-star hotel!”
