Ahead of Power UP, opening 3 August at the Museum of Science and Industry, Marketing Manager Nancy Hopkins takes us through her 5 favourite retro games available to play at the event.
I’m super excited about the return of Power UP! to the Museum of Science and Industry this year but I have a confession to make.
I’m not really a true ‘gamer’ and my tastes are, well, a bit stuck in the past. As far as I am concerned, it’s all about the blocky graphics and the 8-bit chip tunes; you can keep your movie quality animations and award-winning soundtracks!
With that in mind, here’s my top five picks of our Power Up! games for the gamer who’s never really moved on from the heady days of SNES vs Mega Drive…
Lemmings
It’s an often overused term, but Lemmings is a true classic. It brings back childhood memories of playing it on the PC and desperately trying to save those ungrateful green-haired idiots. Never enough parachutes.
Cool Spot
I actually had this on my Sega Game Gear, but you can play it in full-screen glory at Power Up! Cool Spot is a laid-back dude who cruises around a beach picking up little red dots and avoiding crabs. Life lessons for us all there.
Super Mario Bros
The original and the best. Blocky graphics at their finest and none of this new-fangled multi-screen stuff. Worth it for the theme tune alone.
Tekken 2
Marshall Law wins again! I enjoyed kicking ass on my mate Bob’s PS2 back in the day. Quite literally kicking ass, as it was only move I could master.
Bust-A-Move 2
Ridiculously addictive. I used to play this with my best friend after school and we were CHAMPS. When we closed our eyes, all we could see were bubbles (she’s now a child psychologist so I don’t think it was too damaging to her in the long term….)
Power UP opens at the Museum of Science and Industry on Friday 3 August – Sunday 19 August. Ticket prices start from £7 for a 90 minute session. Half day tickets are available. Adult only evening sessions 10 and 17 August.
