The Story of We Invented the Weekend
Back to Top of ListThe story behind We Invented the Weekend is rooted in Salford itself. Back in 1843, local campaigners fought for workers to have Saturday afternoons off – quite literally helping invent the modern weekend as we know it. Today, that spirit lives on in a festival that brings people together to enjoy leisure, creativity and connection across the city.
Now in its third year, the festival has grown into one of the UK’s most distinctive free events, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors to explore Salford in all its energy and variety.
What’s on: highlights across the weekend
Back to Top of ListFrom headline moments to spontaneous drop‑in sessions, the beauty of We Invented the Weekend is that you can shape it around how you like to spend your time.
Opera meets football
One of this year’s standout moments is the world premiere of Perfect Pitch, a spectacular collaboration between English National Opera and Walk the Plank. Bringing together football fans, local choirs and professional singers, over 400 voices will unite in a euphoric performance that includes Puccini’s Nessun Dorma. It’s bold, emotional and unmissable – taking place at 2.15pm on Saturday 6 June.
Lowry takes centre stage
Lowry will be buzzing all weekend, with free activities for all ages both inside and out. Families can enjoy storytelling, familiar BBC characters and creative workshops during the day, while musical theatre fans can look forward to a (North) West End Live showcase featuring songs from SIX, Les Misérables and much‑loved Disney classics. Expect aerial circus, backstage tours and plenty of opportunities to get creative.

Play streets, Salford‑style
Play Streets were born in Salford in the 1920s, and this year the concept returns in a modern, joyful way. In collaboration with Play England, the Plaza will be transformed into a giant space for play – from creative workshops and games for younger children to music, movement, skate zones and hang‑out spaces for teens. It’s all about reclaiming streets as places for imagination and connection.

Club culture, Manchester heritage
New for 2026, Club Culture celebrates Manchester’s global influence on electronic music. Across the weekend, festival‑goers can enjoy DJ sets spanning genres and generations, alongside panel talks and hands‑on DJ workshops. Saturday’s line‑up spotlights female and non‑binary talent, while Sunday brings collectives including Aficionado and Semi Peppered to the dancefloor.

Sports, movement and wellbeing
Weekends look different for everyone – and for many, they’re all about getting active. Across MediaCity and the Quays, you can try everything from BMX sessions, climbing walls and football activities to yoga, taekwondo and guided cycle rides. Feeling brave? Head to Dock 9 for open‑water swimming tasters. All abilities are welcome, and everything is free to drop into.

Music everywhere
From opera to acid brass, baby‑rave beats to BBC Radio 6 Music DJs, music flows through the entire festival. Sunday afternoon sees the joyful People’s Free‑time Parade, led by Mr Wilson’s Second Liners, while Sounds From The Other City takes over the main stage with a bold programme of new and alternative music. Even the canals get involved, with free boat parties sailing throughout the weekend.

Food, shopping and creative discoveries
No great weekend is complete without good food – and GRUB, Manchester’s original street‑food collective, will be curating a top‑tier line‑up of traders throughout the festival. MediaCity favourites like Nell’s Pizza and The Alchemist also join the mix, making it easy to refuel between activities. There’s plenty to browse too, from sustainable fashion to art sales, with pop‑ups including Community Clothing by Patrick Grant and charity retailer Super.Mkt.
Creative workshops fill the Hot House building all weekend, offering everything from making sessions and art exhibitions to quieter spaces for reflection and creativity.
