Manchester, along with the rest of the country, will fall silent as we remember the fallen during the annual Remembrance Sunday commemoration that will take place on Sunday 12th November 2023. There are several services taking place across Greater Manchester to observe Armistice Day this year.
1. Cenotaph, St Peters Square, Manchester.
One of the largest services will be held in St. Peters Square, from 10:30 Mancunian veterans and military personnel will march from John Dalton Street to the Cenotaph, where a service will be held at 11am. The march will then continue onto Peter Street across to St. Peters Square. A two-minute silence will be observed at 11am, signified by the firing of a 105mm gun.
This event is open to the public, with no tickets or passes necessary. Members of the public are encouraged to line the pavements along Whitehall and Parliament Street if they would like to participate.
If you cannot make the event in person, the Manchester City Council will be livestreaming the event from 10:45am, which you can watch here.
2. Albert Bentley Place, The Crescent, Salford.
The parade will assemble by the Old Pint Pot public house, by the A6, at 10:30 on Sunday 12th and make its way to the cenotaph at 10:40. The service is due to start at 10:45, in time to observe the two-minute silence at 11am. Royal British Legion veterans and Armed Forces serving personnel who are volunteering will help to arrange the parade and services.
3. Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery, Stockport.
Wreaths will be laid to commemorate Remembrance Day by the Mayor of Stockport and councillors at the steps of Stockport War Memorial Gallery on Wellington Road South. Maroon rockets will be launched from the civil complex to mark the start and end of the reflective silence. The Art Gallery will be open from 10am on Saturday 11th November, for people to pay their respects.
This gunfire will be heard up to 2 miles away, so residents and shoppers should not be alarmed should they hear the gunfire.
4. Heywood Memorial Gardens, Rochdale.
From 10:15 am, a parade will congregate at Heywood Public House on Tower Street in Heywood and set off towards Hind Hill Street, with a short stop at Church Street for a salute before continuing onto Memorial Gardens to start the Remembrance Service at 10:55 am. The parade will then continue its journey for March Past, retracing their steps to make their way back to Heywood Public House.
This Remembrance Parade is expected to affect traffic and could cause delays to public transport. If you are looking to attend this event, make sure you leave plenty of time for your journey.
