Salford Museum & Art Gallery is an intriguing mix of Victorian and 20th century architecture. First opened in 1850 this beautiful building now incorporates The Collections Gallery, The Victorian Gallery, temporary exhibition spaces and the Local History Library, as well as the Museum shop and Café for those needing a well earned cup of tea and slice of cake or a perfect souvenir.
Salford Museum also boasts the largest Pilkington collection in the UK. It contains examples of almost every artist and most types of ware produced by the factory between 1900-1958 and the 1970s.
Plus the By Hand Gallery offers original hand made art and crafts for that special gift, or for a little treat.
Alongside this, visitors can visit the spectacular Lark Hill Place, the finest recreated Victorian Street of its kind, with authentic period shops and rooms, a must for adults and children alike.
The permanent Victorian Gallery includes a range of fine paintings, decorative arts and sculpture from the period - the impressive marble statues have been specially treated to allow visitors a real hands-on experience.
The Local History Library holds a huge collection of photographs, documents and newspapers relating to Salford's past. It is increasingly popular for family history research, delving into the history of houses, school projects and community heritage in Salford.
The museum offers a wide range of activities sure to please families from gallery quizzes, fancy dress, weekend crafts, holiday workshops, to the opening of the Victorian Sweetshop every Sunday.
All this plus an extensive programme of crafts, activities, workshops and demonstrations means Salford Museum and Art Gallery is certainly not living in the past.
