Once the last mince pie has mysteriously vanished and the festive films start repeating themselves, a Boxing Day walk can be the perfect excuse to get out into the fresh air. Whether you’re looking for gentle, accessible routes around Greater Manchester, something scenic to clear the post-Christmas cobwebs, or a proper stretch of the legs after a hearty dinner, Manchester and its surrounding boroughs have no shortage of options. From peaceful reservoir paths in Stockport and Oldham to winter wanders in Salford and Trafford, it’s a brilliant time to explore the region at your own pace. Think crisp air, wide views, and enough space for everyone - families, buggies, dogs, and anyone who simply fancies a relaxed stroll.

Explore Greater Manchester

Grab your friends and family, hop on a train, tram or into the car, and see what Greater Manchester and its neighbouring towns have to offer. Whether you want a tougher route or an easy lakeside walk, there’s plenty to discover this season.

Here's our top picks this Boxing Day:

1. Bolton: Turton and Entwistle Reservoir and Winter Hill

Bolton offers some great scenic, peaceful walks this time of the year. If you're after a circular trail that's flat the whole way around, you'll enjoy Turton and Entwistle Reservoir, but if you're looking for a challenge, head to Winter Hill. The climb might leave you a little out of breath, but the views are worth every step. On a clear day, you can see right across the Northwest, and sometimes even catch a glimpse of the snowy Welsh mountains in the distance.

2. Bury: Peel Tower and Nuttall Park

Peel Tower, Holcombe Moor and Ramsbottom is a local favourite, and it’s easy to see why. The path up to Peel Tower is short but rewarding, and the view from the top is stunning on a crisp winter morning. You can even see the Manchester skylines from up there! Afterwards, wander down into Ramsbottom for a well-earned hot chocolate or coffee.

Nuttall Park is another local favourite, perfect for the little ones and an easy, flat route the whole way around.

3. Manchester: Heaton Park and Castlefield

You don’t have to leave the city to find a bit of winter peace. Heaton Park is lovely this time of year, with frosted trees, quiet paths, and views looking out to the city. It’s a great spot for a slow walk with family, friends, or your four-legged companion.

If you’re looking for a more urban walk this winter, then the Castlefield neighbourhood is a must-visit! Castlefield, located at the south-west end of Deansgate, is the industrial and Roman heart of Manchester. It is home to a Roman fort, networks of canals, old mills, cosy pubs like The Wharf and restaurants.

4. Tameside: GM Ringway, Werneth Low Country Park and Stalybridge Country Park

The GM Ringway Walking Trail runs through riversides, moorlands, and pretty market towns, making Tameside a great place to explore a stretch of the route. It’s a mix of open views and cosy corners with plenty of cafes and local pubs to stop in along the way.

Werneth Low Country Park is a local favourite hillside park offering some of the best panoramic views in the area, looking out over Manchester and the Pennines. It’s popular for a leisurely stroll and gorgeous for watching the sunset, even in winter.

You may also want to explore Stalybridge and its independent scene. A popular walk is Stalybridge Country Park, where you can enjoy a large stretch of moorland, woodland and reservoirs above Stalybridge. Ideal for a Boxing Day natter, spotting wildlife and taking in scenic views across the Tame Valley.

5. Oldham: Dovestone Reservoir

Set on the edge of the Peak District, Dovestone Reservoir looks especially beautiful in winter. It’s a rather challenging walk if you decide to go up into the hills, but equally rewards you with scenic views on a clear day. If you're just planning to walk around the reservoir, it's a relatively easy, flat walk.

6. Rochdale: Hollingworth Lake

Hollingworth Lake is a classic spot for a winter walk. It’s a flat path with lovely views, and there’s always a good chance of spotting some wildlife along the water’s edge. When you’re done, grab a warm drink in one of the lakeside cafes.

7. Salford: Worsley Village

With its canal paths and timber-framed cottages, Worsley Village feels like it was made for winter. It’s calm, pretty, and full of charm – the kind of place that looks like it belongs on a Christmas card.

8. Stockport: Bramall Hall and Park and Alderley Edge

Bramall Hall is a hidden gem tucked away in Stockport. It’s a beautiful old manor house surrounded by parkland and perfect for a winter’s walk. After exploring its history, be sure to stop by the café for something warm and sweet.

Just a short car or train ride outside of Manchester, you'll find Alderley Edge. Alderley Edge is beautiful in winter, with easy countryside walks and a viewpoint that offers great views across Cheshire. The village has a cosy, charming feel that really does make you feel like you’ve stepped into The Holiday.

9. Trafford: Dunham Massey

Few places capture the season quite like Dunham Massey. Deer wander quietly through the frosty grass and the old estate looks something out of a Christmas film. If you can, visit around dusk, it feels like you’ve stepped into another world.

10. Wigan: Pennington Flash and Haigh Hall and Woodland Park

If you’re after a lakeside walk, Pennington Flash is the place to go. The lakeside paths are wide and open, and there’s always plenty of birdlife to spot. It’s one of those places that makes you instantly relax.

Another popular winter walk is Haigh Hall and Woodland Park. The trails wind through woodland and open spaces, and there’s a lake and historic Haigh Hall to see along the way.

11. The Peaks, Cheshire & Derbyshire

If you’re happy to venture a little beyond the city, the Peak District and the rolling landscapes of Cheshire and Derbyshire offer some of the best winter walking in the country. You’ll find everything from short, easy circular trails with big views to iconic hilltops and moorland routes that feel surprisingly wild for somewhere so close to Manchester. Here's our top 4 picks:

  1. For something dramatic but doable, Mam Tor’s circular path is a favourite - a steady climb with huge panoramas and a route that’s usually manageable even in winter conditions.

  2. If you prefer something with a touch of mystery, Lud’s Church is a brilliant choice: a deep, moss-covered chasm tucked into the forest near Gradbach, perfect for a slow, atmospheric wander.

  3. Tegg’s Nose Country Park near Macclesfield is another crowd-pleaser, offering a mix of rugged old quarries, woodland, and gentle trails.

  4. Over in Glossop and the Dark Peak, there are moorland walks that feel wonderfully remote, while places like Castleton, Buxton and Rowarth make lovely bases for shorter, scenic loops followed by a warm drink in a village café.

Wherever you go, you’ll find options for all abilities, from easy family-friendly paths to more invigorating routes if you’re in the mood to walk off your Christmas dinner.

Whether you stay local or head a little further into the hills, a Boxing Day walk is a simple, refreshing way to round off the holiday. Manchester’s mix of accessible paths, peaceful reservoirs, forest trails and nearby Peak District gems means there’s a route for every tempo - slow, steady, or spirited.

Wrap up warm, bring a flask, and enjoy a winter wander that feels like a treat rather than a task. Fresh air, good company, and a change of scenery: it’s hard to think of a better way to ease into the stretch between Christmas and the New Year.
