National Record Store Day is an opportunity for music lovers to come together and celebrate Greater Manchester's vibrant independent music scene. This year it will be taking place on Saturday, the 12th of April 2025. 

From the iconic Piccadilly Records to the cosy corners of Vinyl Exchange, and newer favourites like Tasty Records in Altrincham and Wax and Beans in Bury, Greater Manchester is packed with brilliant spots to discover music. These record shops offer the chance to explore, rediscover, and celebrate the region's legendary music scene - while also supporting local, independent businesses along the way. 

And with the resurgence of vinyl, it has become one for the calendars!

Here are some staple spots to visit: 

1. Piccadilly Records - 53 Oldham St, Manchester

Piccadilly Records has proudly been serving the city with vinyl since 1978. Located in the Northern Quarter, it's one of the UK's most respected independent record shops, known for its wide selection of genres - from indie and alternative to soul, funk, electronic, and everything in between. Music lovers from all over come here for staff recommendations, limited-edition releases, and the welcoming vibe. 

 

2. Vinyl Exchange - 18 Oldham St, Manchester

Located in Manchester's vibrant Northern Quarter, Vinyl Exchange is one of the UK's largest and most iconic independent record shops. Since 1988, it has been a treasure trove for music lovers, offering an impressive selection of new and pre-loved vinyl, CDs, and DVDs across all genres - from rock and indie to soul, dance, and everything in between. Whether you're a serious collector or just browsing for something new, the knowledgeable staff and relaxed vibe make it a must-visit. 

 

3. Tasty Record Shop - 25 Regent Rd, Altrincham

Tasty Records in Altrincham is a hidden gem for music lovers and vinyl collectors alike. This independent record shop offers a carefully curated selection of new and vintage vinyl, spanning everything from indie and rock to funk, jazz, and electronic. They keep their mix of second-hand and new records to browse around 50/50. Regular live sessions and events add to its community feel, making it more than just a shop - it's a local music hub.

4. Clampdown Records - 9-11 Paton St, Manchester

Tucked away just off Manchester's bustling Market Street, Clampdown Records is a must-visit for vinyl lovers. This long-standing independent record shop is packed with new and second-hand records, covering everything from punk, indie, and rock to soul, reggae, and more. Its treasure-hunt vibe makes every visit feel like you might stumble upon something special. Whether you're looking for a casual browse, classic albums, or just a good music chat, Clampdown Records is a hidden gem with real character. 

 

5. Eastern Bloc - 5A Stevenson Square, Manchester

Located in the heart of Manchester's Northern Quarter, Eastern Bloc is a legendary record shop with deep roots in the city's dance music culture. Since the 1980s, it's been a go-to spot for fans of electronic, techno, house, drum and bass, and hip-hop. With its expertly curated selection of vinyl and regular in-store DJ sets, Eastern Bloc is more than just a record shop - it's a hub for Manchester's underground music scene. 6. Beatin' Rhythm Records - Warwick St, Prestwich

7. Sifters Records - 177 Fog Ln, Manchester

Sifters Records, tucked away in Burnage, South Manchester, is a legendary spot with deep roots in the city's music history. Famously name-dropped in Oasis's Shakermaker, it's been a favourite for local music lovers since the early 1970s. The shop is packed with vinyl and CDs across genres - from rock and indie to pop and classics - at affordable prices. With its old-school charm and no-fuss vibe, Sifters offers a proper record-digging experience. Whether you're after hidden gems or just want to step into a slice of Mancunian music history, Sifters is a must-visit for any vinyl enthusiast or Oasis fan. 

 

8. Vinyl Revival - 5 Hilton St, Manchester

Vinyl Revival is a beloved independent record shop located in Manchester's Northern Quarter, known for celebrating the city's rich musical heritage. Alongside a solid selection of new and classic vinyl across all genres, the shop specialises in Manchester music - think Joy Division, The Smiths, Oasis and New Order. It's a great spot to pick up local band merch, rare reissues, and memorabilia. With a friendly, knowledgeable team and a strong community feel, Vinyl Revival is more than just a shop - it's a tribute to Manchester's iconic sound. 9. All Night Flight Records - 10 Mealhouse Brow, Stockport

All Night Flight Records in Stockport is a carefully curated haven for adventurous music lovers. Tucked away above Rare Mags in the town centre, the shop specialises in experimental, ambient, electronic, jazz, and leftfield sounds from around the world. It's a space for discovery - whether you're into obscure reissues, underground labels, or fresh new releases that push boundaries. 

With a minimalist aesthetic and a true passion for sound, All Night Flight offers a unique vinyl experience. It's a must-visit for anyone looking to explore beyond the mainstream and dive into something deeper! 

 

10. Wax and Beans - 16 Market St, Bury

Wax and Beans in Bury is a vibrant independent record shop that's become a favourite for music lovers in Greater Manchester. Owned by partners Ben and Louise, the shop uniquely combines music retail within a coffee shop environment, selling new and used vinyl records and music merchandise alongside coffee and food.

Front of house is headed up by their manager Steve, a knowledgeable muso who also shares their passion for customer service, and their distinct lack of musical talent! 

Situated over two floors, the record shop has a turntable for customers to spin any of their pre-loved vinyl through headphones. The shop also hosts regular in-store performances, meet-and-greets, signings, and Q&A sessions. 11. Kingbee Records - 519 Wilbraham Rd, Chorlton-cum-Hardy

Kingbee Records in Chorlton is known for its extensive selection of new and pre-loved vinyl. Kingbee offers a diverse range of genres, including rock, soul, jazz, and rare pressings. The store has a loyal following, with its knowledgeable staff always ready to help you track down hidden gems or recommend something new. Whether you're a serious collector or just starting your vinyl journey, Kingbee provides a welcoming space for all and remains a cornerstone of Manchester's vibrant music scene. 

 

12. Sticky Black Tarmac Record Shop - 3rd Floor, Spinners Mill, Park Ln, Leigh

Sticky Black Tarmac in Leigh is a brilliant hidden gem for vinyl lovers looking for something a little different. This independent record shop has a handpicked selection of new and second-hand vinyl, spanning everything from punk, indie, and alternative to funk, soul, and more. 13. Vinyl Resting Place - 3rd Floor, Afflecks, 52 Church St, Manchester

Vinyl Resting Place, tucked away on the top floor of Manchester's iconic Afflecks, is a collector's paradise.
