We spoke to Lucy Deakin, a alt-pop artist who started her career in Manchester and returning to perform at this year’s long-awaited Beyond the Music conference and festival. Spanning across three days on 9 to 11 October 2024, the conference brings music industry professionals and artists alike together to discuss the future of music.
We discussed her experiences starting off as a musician in Manchester, her favourite shows she’s played across the city and what audiences can expect from her show at Beyond the Music.
Tell us about your experience as a musician in Manchester
I see Manchester as the place that started my career as an artist. I went to university at the Royal Northern College of Music, which really opened the door for me to start making my own music with other like-minded musicians and I’m so grateful for all my time spent here.
Over the years, I’ve played a lot of great shows in Manchester. Two shows that stick out to me would be my first ever headline at YES Pink Room in 2021 - it was really special to bring that show to Manchester first.
Another stand out was the sold out O2 Ritz show I supported on last year alongside The Hunna with Kid Kapichi - that was a very a surreal moment. I had so many friends and family come to these shows which made them extra special, so I can’t wait to be back for Beyond the Music.
How does it feel being back in the city after some time away?
Since moving to London, I appreciate coming back to Manchester so much - I have so many memories here from all my firsts; first shows, shoots and music videos were all made here. It will always be a place I love coming back to. It’s so nice to be in a familiar place where I know my way around!
As this is your first time at Beyond the Music, what are you most excited about?
It’s my first show in Manchester this year so I’m excited to see some familiar faces and fans I haven’t seen in a while. The opportunity to debut my new music to new crowds is so exciting - I’m very grateful to be involved! I’m looking forward to seeing some new acts too, as Manchester always has such great grassroot artists coming through.
What can people expect from your performance at Beyond the Music?
My music has changed a lot over the years, going from a dance pop to more of an alternative pop sound, taking influence from everything from Charli XCX to Avril Lavigne. I’m going to be debuting my new mixtape WELCOME TO MY CHURCH which comes out the same day as the show on October 11 so it’s going to be a fun release party… also I may be debuting a new song from my next era because it seems like the place to premier it!
Catch Lucy’s show at Soup at 8pm on Friday 11 October as part of Beyond the Music.
