Only have a couple of days in Manchester? This itinerary gives you a taste of the city’s best food, culture, and neighbourhoods, with plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
Day 1: Coffee, Culture and the Northern Quarter
Back to Top of ListMorning: Architecture, Coffee & Local Charm
Begin your day at Ezra & Gil, an independent coffee shop on Peter Street (who also have another location over in the Northern Quarter), known for its seriously good coffee, fresh food, and relaxed atmosphere.
Once you’ve had breakfast, head to St Peter’s Square, recognised as the heart of the city and admire its mix of historic and modern architecture.

Attractions Nearby:
Central Library – Step inside Central Library, one of Manchester’s most Instagrammable spots. A beautiful circular building in the heart of the city with a grand rotunda and quiet reading rooms.
Manchester Art Gallery – Home to classic and contemporary art, including an excellent Pre-Raphaelite collection.
Manchester Town Hall (Reopening soon) – One of the city’s most recognised buildings, admired for its neo-Gothic architecture and used many times for filming purposes.
Chinatown – And don’t miss the colourful sights of nearby Chinatown, just a few minutes away, with colourful shopfronts, restaurants, and the distinctive red archway that marks its entrance.

Lunch & Afternoon: Scranchester and the Northern Quarter
For lunch, join the Scranchester Chinatown Tour and explore the sights, tastes, and sounds of Manchester’s Chinatown on this brand-new food tour. The city’s Chinatown is the second largest in the UK and one of the largest in Europe. It’s going to be an eclectic mix of dishes, showcasing food from different regions of China, as well as sampling cuisine from other East and Southeast Asian restaurants in the area.
After the tour, spend the afternoon exploring the Northern Quarter. Once a centre for textiles, it’s now known for its independent shops, cafés, street art and creative energy.
Northern Quarter Favourites:
Afflecks (52 Church St) – Manchester’s most iconic independent market, full of independent stalls and small local brands. You will not find anything quite like it!
Fred Aldous (37 Lever St) – A long-standing art and craft shop full of art supplies, design items, and unique gifts. They even have a vintage photobooth inside!
Deadstock General Store (48 Edge St) – A curated shop with everyday goods, like Miffy and Snoopy accessories, candles and homeware. The shop itself and the entrance make for good candid/lifestyle shots.
Form Lifestyle Store (6 Bradley St) – Minimal, beautifully designed home goods, stationery, and gifts.
UNITOM (1a Stevenson Square) – A carefully curated collection of books on visual arts, design, photography, fashion and counterculture.
Manchester Northern Quarter Walking Tour
If you’d prefer to book a Manchester Northern Quarter Walking Tour, this is also an option. For £12 you can enjoy a 1.5-hour walking tour through the city’s most creative neighbourhood.
Visit popular spots like Stevenson Square, Tariff Street, Port Street, Little Lever Street, The Daily Express Building, Oldham Street and Afflecks. Plus, plenty of hidden gems you’d never find on your own!
Evening: Dinner at Dishoom
End your first day with dinner at Dishoom, set in a beautifully restored Grade II-listed building. The restaurant is inspired by the Irani cafés of old Bombay, serving dishes such as the House Black Daal, Chicken Ruby, and freshly baked naan. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, making it a lovely spot to unwind.
Extend Your Night
If you’re not quite ready to call it a night, the Northern Quarter has plenty of places to unwind with a drink.
Late Night Bars:
Renae (45-47 Thomas St) – A relaxed, modern bar with live DJs, cocktails and a friendly feel.
The Whiskey Jar (14 Tariff St) – An old favourite with live music, plenty of character and some of the best cocktails in town.
The Jane Eyre (14 Hood St, Ancoats) – Just outside of the Northern Quarter, over in Ancoats, The Jane Eyre is a neighbourhood bar, serving up classic cocktails, interesting wines and local beers.
Day 2: Museums, Neighbourhoods and Nightlife
Back to Top of List
Morning: Coffee, Museums & Galleries
Begin your day with breakfast at Federal Oxford Road, one of Manchester’s most popular cafés. Known for its Aussie-inspired brunch dishes and specialty coffee, it’s the ideal way to fuel up for a full day of exploring.
From there, stroll up the Oxford Road corridor to Manchester Museum, recently redeveloped and home to treasures from around the world. Get up close and personal with ancient Egyptian mummies and a giant T. rex skeleton.
Just a short walk further is The Whitworth, an award-winning gallery set in the greenery of Whitworth Park, where you can enjoy everything from cutting-edge contemporary exhibitions to historic works, all framed by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the park.

Lunch & Afternoon: Tapas, Libraries and Castlefield
For lunch, head into the city centre. If you’re in the mood for small plates, El Gato Negro offers award-winning tapas in a chic converted townhouse on King Street.
If you’d prefer something more relaxed, Franco Manca serves wood-fired sourdough pizza with a light and airy crust.
After lunch, visit the John Rylands Library, one of Manchester’s most iconic buildings. Its soaring neo-Gothic interior, intricate stonework, and stained-glass windows make it feel like a cathedral of knowledge.
Then wander down to Castlefield, where you can walk along the Castlefield Viaduct, a Victorian railway bridge transformed into a ‘sky garden’ filled with seasonal blooms.
Take your time exploring the surrounding neighbourhood of canals, Roman ruins, and historic warehouses that showcase the city’s industrial past.
Evening: Dinner at Chotto Matte
As the sun sets, enjoy dinner at Chotto Matte, where Japanese and Peruvian flavours come together in a bold, vibrant Nikkei menu. The lively atmosphere and stylish interiors make it a perfect spot to round off your day of culture and history.
Extend Your Night
If you’re not ready to call it a night, head over to Spinningfields and St John’s, two of Manchester’s most dynamic evening destinations. In Spinningfields, you’ll find sleek cocktail bars, rooftop terraces, and riverside spots perfect for people-watching. Try 20 Stories for skyline views, or The Alchemist for theatrical cocktails.
Wander over to the neighbouring St John’s District, a newer district that mixes creative spaces with independent bars and late-night hangouts. The area is home to the most perfect tucked-away cocktail spots and pubs. And if a drink isn’t your thing, there’s still plenty to enjoy, like catching a film at the Everyman Cinema to trying your hand at the Pac-Man Live Experience.
If You’re Staying Longer
Back to Top of ListHave an extra day? There’s even more to explore. Visit Aviva Studios, Manchester’s go-to cultural venue, hosting world-class performances all year round. Discover the city’s industrial heritage at the Science and Industry Museum. Or, if you’re a football fan, book a stadium tour at either Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium or Manchester United’s Old Trafford.
