Museums, Galleries and Heritage Attractions

Everyone knows the best place to take shelter in the rain is inside a lovely museum, and in Manchester, that means visiting the Science and Industry Museum, Manchester Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, or the Whitworth for exhibitions.

A standout attraction to visit this winter is the Power Hall at the Science and Industry Museum Manchester, which has recently reopened after a major restoration. Experience the sights, smells and sounds of the working gallery, which showcases one of the UK’s largest collections of historic engines, and discover how industry in Manchester shaped the world as we know it today. New for 2026 is the Horrible Science: Cosmic Chaos, an electrifying new exhibition, launches at the Science and Industry Museum in February. Step into the Solar System on a thrilling adventure where mystery, mischief, and rocket-loads of silly science await. You can also explore the Power Hall after-hours and enjoy a unique programme of music, heritage and creativity at this special adult-only, evening event.

Another unmissable experience is Helios at Victoria Baths. This touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram is a seven-metre-wide, internally lit model of the Sun, showing incredibly detailed features like sunspots and solar filaments. Safe to view up close, Helios combines visual art with an immersive surround sound composition. Its visit marks Victoria Baths’ exciting new cultural direction, offering visitors an unforgettable, interactive experience that blends art, science, and creativity.
