Black History Month takes place this October, offering a chance to celebrate the achievements, history, and culture of Black communities across the country. Since its first recognition in the UK in 1987, it has become a vital moment in the calendar to champion diversity, inclusion, and equality.
The theme for this year, 'Standing Firm in Power and Pride,' shines a light on the resilience, leadership, and cultural impact of Black people, both past and present.
Why Manchester is a Must-Visit City for Black History Month
Manchester is one of the best places to visit for Black History Month because of its powerful role in Black history. The city hosted the historic 5th Pan-African Congress in 1945 which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. This event was a turning point in the fight for decolonisation and civil rights, and is home to inspiring leaders like Kath Locke and Olive Morris. Today, Manchester celebrates Black History Month with events, exhibitions, and performances that showcase Black creativity, from fashion and music to art and poetry. Visitors can explore the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre’s archives, learn about Manchester’s Caribbean Carnival, and take part in community-led talks and workshops. More than just celebration, Manchester uses Black History Month to reflect, educate, and reclaim local narratives, making it a meaningful city to experience the past, present, and future of Black British culture.

Black in the Game: Celebrating Black Excellence in English Football
This autumn, the National Football Museum is proud to launch its brand-new exhibition, Black in the Game, shining a spotlight on the powerful, untold stories of African and Caribbean communities who have shaped English football.
Co-curated alongside voices from across football’s Black heritage community, the exhibition honours the trailblazers who broke barriers, the global icons who redefined the game, and the players and cultural moments that continue to influence the sport, and the nation, today.
From Ian Wright’s iconic Crystal Palace shirt to Mary Phillip’s UEFA Cup final shirt from Arsenal’s legendary quadruple-winning season, *Black in the Game* celebrates the impact, talent, and legacy of Black players who’ve changed football forever.
- The exhibition opens Friday 10 October 2025 and is included in your general admission ticket.
- Residents of the City of Manchester enjoy free entry - the perfect reason to explore the stories that continue to inspire the beautiful game.
