Manchester isn't short of things to do in summer, but when the city gets busy, sometimes the best plan is simply to head outdoors.
What surprises many visitors is how much green and blue space exists within easy reach of the city centre. Canals weave through neighbourhoods like Castlefield and New Islington, riverside paths cut through the heart of the city, and larger parks, gardens and walking routes are only a short tram or train journey away.
Whether you're visiting for a weekend or extending your stay for a few extra days, these are some of the best green spaces, waterside walks and local favourites to explore across Manchester and Greater Manchester this summer.
The Best Outdoor Spots in Manchester City Centre
Back to Top of List
Manchester city centre isn't packed with large parks, but that's part of what makes exploring it interesting. Some of the best outdoor spaces are found along canals, beside rivers and tucked between neighbourhoods that many visitors never make it to.
Mayfield Park
Just a few minutes from Manchester Piccadilly, Mayfield Park has quickly become one of the city's standout outdoor spaces. Built around the restored River Medlock, the park has transformed a former industrial site into a place where people come to meet friends, enjoy lunch outdoors or simply escape the pace of the city for an hour.
It's also a great starting point for exploring Manchester on foot, with easy routes leading towards New Islington, Ancoats and the wider canal network.
New Islington Marina and Cotton Field Park
If you've spent the morning around Piccadilly or the Northern Quarter, New Islington feels noticeably calmer.
The marina, canal paths and waterside walk towards Ancoats make it one of those parts of the city that's easy to stumble across and end up staying longer than planned. On a sunny afternoon, you'll find people sitting beside the water with a coffee, reading on the grass at Cotton Field Park or wandering along the towpaths without much of a destination in mind.
It may not feature on every visitor itinerary, but that's part of its charm. The canals, lock gates and quieter streets offer a glimpse of everyday Manchester away from the busiest parts of the city centre.
Castlefield and the Canal Network
If you're only going to do one city-centre walk, make it Castlefield.
Often described as the birthplace of modern Manchester, this historic neighbourhood is home to some of the city's most recognisable canal routes. The towpaths around Castlefield Basin, the Bridgewater Canal and the surrounding waterways are easy to follow and packed with character.
On a summer evening, the area comes into its own. Narrowboats drift through the locks, waterside terraces fill up and people linger beside the canal long after work has finished. It's one of the few places where Manchester's industrial history and modern city life sit comfortably side by side.
While you're here, it's worth making a stop at Castlefield Viaduct. The restored Victorian railway structure, often compared to New York's High Line, offers a different perspective over the canals and rooftops below.
St John's, Aviva Studios, The Green
One of the nicest places to spend a summer afternoon in the city centre is around St John's and Aviva Studios.
The seating areas outside Aviva Studios have become a popular spot on sunny days, with views across the river and a front-row seat to one of Manchester's fastest-changing neighbourhoods.
The area is also home to outdoor venues such as Courts Club, where you can grab a drink, watch live sport or spend an evening outdoors without venturing far from the city centre. Just around the corner, The Green has recently opened on Grape Street, bringing a new outdoor social space to St John's with lawn seating, a large outdoor screen, live sport, film nights and a packed programme of summer events.
While you're also in the neighbourhood, stop by St John's Gardens, a local green space with a real community feel.
Worth the Train or Tram Ride
Back to Top of List
It's easy to forget how much countryside, green space and waterfront scenery sits on Manchester's doorstep.
Thanks to the Bee Network and Greater Manchester's rail connections, places like Didsbury, Worsley Village, Salford, Stockport and Tameside are all within easy reach of the city centre. If you're looking to spend a little more time outdoors during your visit, these are some of the local favourites worth making the journey for.
Didsbury and the Mersey Trail
When the weather's good, Didsbury is one of those places people naturally gravitate towards.
Most visitors head straight for Fletcher Moss Gardens, and for good reason, but some of the best walks start once you leave the gardens behind. The paths along the River Mersey stretch for miles through woodland, open green space and quieter corners of South Manchester, making it easy to spend a couple of hours wandering without really noticing the time pass.
Afterwards, head back towards Didsbury Village or Burton Road, where independent coffee shops, bakeries, bars and restaurants spill out onto the pavement during the summer months.
MediaCity and The Quays
The waterfront paths around MediaCity and The Quays are among the easiest and most enjoyable walks in Greater Manchester, with wide promenades, waterside seating and plenty of places to stop along the way. On sunny evenings you'll find runners, cyclists, paddleboarders and groups of friends making the most of the waterfront.
There's usually plenty happening too. This summer sees the return of GRUB on the Docks, bringing independent street food, outdoor bars, live music, film screenings and big-screen sporting events to the waterfront throughout the season. It adds even more atmosphere to an area that's already one of the best places in Greater Manchester to spend a warm evening by the water.
Ordsall Hall
A short walk from The Quays, Ordsall Hall offers a quieter change of pace from the waterfront.
The Tudor manor house has been part of Salford for centuries and sits within landscaped gardens that are ideal for a quick wander on a sunny day. It's not somewhere that draws the same crowds as MediaCity, but that's exactly why many people like it.
If you're already spending time around The Quays, it's an easy addition to your route and a good reminder that some of Greater Manchester's most interesting places are often hiding in plain sight.
Worsley Village and RHS Bridgewater
Worsley Village is one of those places people across Greater Manchester always seem to recommend, and once you've been, it's easy to see why.
The canals are the main draw, with waterside paths winding through the village, past historic bridges, old warehouses and plenty of spots to stop for a coffee, lunch or a drink along the way. On a sunny day, you'll find walkers, cyclists and families making the most of one of the prettiest corners of Greater Manchester.
Just down the road, RHS Bridgewater makes an easy addition to the day. Even if you're not a keen gardener, the grounds are worth exploring, particularly during the summer months when everything is looking its best.
Marple and the Peak Forest Canal, Stockport
Stockport has earned plenty of attention in recent years for its food, drink and independent businesses, but some of the area's best scenery can be found along the canal.
Pick up the Peak Forest Canal and head towards Marple, where the route passes locks, aqueducts and stretches of countryside that feel surprisingly far removed from Greater Manchester. It's a straightforward walk and one that's popular with locals looking to get outdoors without travelling too far.
If you have the time, continue towards Marple Locks and the aqueduct over the River Goyt. It's one of the most scenic spots on the network and a good reminder that some of the region's best walking routes are hiding just beyond the city.
Etherow Country Park, Stockport
As Greater Manchester's oldest country park, Etherow Country Park is a favourite with dog walkers, families and anyone looking for a few hours outdoors. The trails wind around lakes, through woodland and past plenty of spots where it's worth slowing down and taking in the surroundings.
What makes Etherow so appealing is that it feels much further away than it actually is. Despite being within easy reach of Manchester, it offers a taste of the countryside that many visitors don't realise is sitting right on the region's doorstep.
Sale Water Park
For many Mancunians, Sale Water Park is a go-to spot when the sun makes an appearance.
The trail offers wide walking routes around the lake, waterside paths and plenty of open space to spread out with a picnic or simply enjoy being outdoors.

Kinder Scout
As the highest point in the Peak District, Kinder Scout is a favourite among walkers. The climb can be tough in places, but the views from the plateau make it well worth the effort. Popular routes start from Edale or Hayfield.

Pendle Hill
Best known for its connection to the Pendle Witch Trials, Pendle Hill is a fantastic place for a walk. The route to the summit is relatively straightforward and rewards walkers with sweeping views across Lancashire.

Mam Tor

For those wanting a longer and more adventurous walk, Bleaklow offers rugged moorland landscapes and a sense of real wilderness. The route also passes the remains of the Bleaklow Bomber crash site.
Address: Bleaklow, Glossop, SK13 7EJ
Shutlingsloe
Often referred to as the "Matterhorn of Cheshire", Shutlingsloe may be smaller than some neighbouring peaks, but its distinctive shape and far-reaching views make it a rewarding climb.
Address: Macclesfield Forest, Macclesfield, SK11 0AR
Lyme Park
If you're after something gentler, Lyme Park offers a variety of walking routes through beautiful parkland and woodland, with plenty of opportunities to spot deer along the way.
Address: Lyme Park, Disley, Stockport SK12 2NR
From challenging hikes to leisurely countryside walks, these destinations offer some of the best opportunities to enjoy the outdoors just beyond Greater Manchester.
