At Global Grooves, creativity meets sustainability. Based at The Vale, a beautifully repurposed textile mill, the organisation combines a deep love for the arts with a strong commitment to the environment. From powering live music gigs with renewable energy to fostering biodiversity, they’re proving that the arts can play a vital role in tackling the climate crisis.
How Global Grooves is Leading the Way
1. Transforming The Vale into a Carbon-Neutral Space
Global Grooves is determined to make The Vale carbon neutral by 2030, with big steps already taken:
- Energy efficiency upgrades: Retrofitted LED lighting, including stage lights, and live power monitoring to minimise waste.
- Renewable energy: Solar panels generating an estimated 14,300kWh per year and heat pumps replacing gas systems in key buildings.
- Community-driven solutions: They’re collaborating with the local community to develop a hydro turbine in the old mill stream, expected to offset the energy use from monthly live music gigs.
2. Promoting Green Lifestyles
Visitors are encouraged to reduce their carbon footprint when traveling to The Vale by walking or cycling. They’ve also set up a community garden on a post-industrial site, breathing life into the area and creating a space for learning and biodiversity.
3. Future-Focused Sustainability Projects
Global Grooves isn’t stopping there. Their ongoing projects include:
- Permaculture practices: Increasing biodiversity through sustainable gardening methods.
- Rainwater harvesting: Developing a system for irrigation to conserve water.
- Sustainable programming: Exploring new ways to make their arts initiatives more eco-friendly.
4. Empowering Staff, Volunteers, and Artists
Carbon Literacy training ensures everyone involved at Global Grooves is equipped to make greener choices. The team also partners with national and international artists to integrate sustainability into performances, offering a unique draw for performers and audiences alike.
Why Sustainability Matters to Global Grooves
Global Grooves sees sustainability as essential to their mission of bringing people together through art and culture.
“As individuals, we care deeply about our communities and the environment, both locally and globally. The arts have the power to share stories, inspire action, and create joy and hope in the face of the climate crisis.”
Other Local Sustainability Champions They Love
Global Grooves celebrates collaboration and finds inspiration in fellow green businesses in the area:
Manchester Bike Kitchen (Hyde): Refurbishing bikes, offering trial commuting loans, and teaching people how to maintain their bikes.
Cabasa Carnival Arts (Vale-based neighbours): Exploring natural dyes and sustainable dressmaking projects.
Whether you’re attending a gig, taking part in a workshop, or simply stopping by, The Vale is a hub of creativity and sustainability. Global Grooves is showing how the arts can lead the way in building a greener future.
