The Proud Trust, a trailblazing LGBT+ youth charity, has made sustainability a key pillar of its operations. Following the 2022 rebuild of its flagship space, The Proud Place, the organisation continues to set an inspiring example by weaving eco-conscious practices into its daily activities and youth programming.
How The Proud Trust Champions Sustainability
1. A Building Designed for the Future
When The Proud Place was rebuilt in 2022, sustainability was a top priority. The building earned a BREEAM-equivalent rating of ‘Excellent’ in an evaluation by ARUP, which praised its environmentally conscious design and focus on visitor wellbeing.
Key features of the building include:
- Thorough insulation to reduce energy usage.
- Triple-glazed windows for improved energy efficiency.
- An air source heat pump to heat and cool the space efficiently.
- By integrating these features, The Proud Place has created a space that aligns with its mission to support the health and wellbeing of the community while minimising environmental impact.
2. Eco-Friendly Maintenance and Events
The commitment to sustainability extends beyond the building itself:
- Green suppliers: The team prioritises working with environmentally responsible suppliers for the upkeep of the building.
- Sustainable events: The Centre’s events are designed with eco-consciousness in mind, hosting activities like clothes swaps, bike maintenance sessions, and gardening workshops.
3. Sustainability in Youth Programming
Young people involved with The Proud Trust are deeply aware of their environmental impact, and this awareness is reflected in the projects they undertake:
- Gender-affirming upcycling project: This creative initiative allows participants to repurpose old clothing, reducing waste while also helping them explore and express their gender identity in a safe and supportive environment.
Why Sustainability Matters to The Proud Trust
For The Proud Trust, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a responsibility.
“As an LGBT+ youth charity, we are accountable to the young people who will inherit the world we currently impact. To ensure a future where they can thrive, we feel it’s our duty to prioritise sustainable practices and encourage our partners to do the same.”
Other Sustainable Favourites in Manchester
The Proud Trust loves supporting other eco-friendly spots around the city, including:
Castlefield Viaduct: A stunning green space that showcases how urban areas can be transformed sustainably.
The Eighth Day: A local gem that combines ethical shopping and sustainable living.
The Proud Place is more than just a building—it’s a hub of sustainability, creativity, and community. Whether you’re stopping by for an event, taking part in a workshop, or supporting their inspiring youth programmes, you’ll find a space that’s committed to making the world a better, greener place.
